Floods in Germany

The project BEIDS has been following with great concern the developments related to the recent floods in the southernmost parts of the Baltic Sea Region. Both the Czech Republic and Eastern Germany are located in the so-called Baltic catchment area, which means that all Baltic citizens share a concern with the recent floods happening far south.

BEIDS has documented the latest floods, the greatest ones over the past 100 years. The set of pictures here is aimed at illustrating the problem and outline the need for an early-warning system for monitoring eventual disturbances in rivers across the region. One of the answers to the problem may come "from above", i.e. from the use of satellite based data which may allow problems to be identified and timely addressed.
